Mercedes New Light is an impressive day-for-night spot focusing on the AMG SL, an iconic Mercedes sports classic. Shot during the day, our team created convincing visuals, and a night-time look for the ad.
New Light was the first commercial project I worked on. It was incredibly insightful, and an absolute blast to be a part of.

To start off my work on this spot, I processed the CAD files that Mercedes provided for the car, and made them production ready. We needed the shell of the car, isolated and small enough for comp, to use for reflections replacement. The file they sent us was referencing more than 200 models, over 30gb of data, and I broke it down to under 2gb for our compositors.
For this shot, the hill on the right was rendered in CG. This hill was blocking the buildings behind it, so I had to rebuild the hill and the grass breaking up the edge. I was provided with a tracked camera, image plane, and the existing hill. After modeling, I handed off an fbx of the new hill to our compositors for rendering.
This was the final shot that I touched, the opening shot of the spot. For this shot I did a lighting render for the car, using the aforementioned CAD shell. Again, I was provided with a tracked camera and image sequence. After matching the shell up with where the car was in the shot, I rendered out a lighting pass for our compositors.
